Repair Costs

What affects the cost of auto body repair?

Two things drive body repair pricing: whether the panel can be repaired or has to be replaced, and how much paint work the color match requires. A dent in the middle of a door panel is a very different job from the same dent on a body line or an edge.

Repair or replace the panel

A shallow dent in flat sheet metal with the paint intact can often be worked out. Once the metal is stretched, creased along a body line, or the paint is broken, the calculation changes.

Sometimes replacing a panel is genuinely cheaper than the hours it would take to bring the original back correctly. A shop should tell you which it is and why.

Paint is usually the bigger half

Matching automotive paint is not simply ordering your color code. Paint fades with sun exposure, so a factory-code match on a ten-year-old car will not match the panels beside it.

This is why painters blend into adjacent panels — so the eye never catches an edge. Blending costs more than spraying one panel, and it is the difference between a repair you cannot see and one you can spot from across a parking lot.

  • Metallic and pearl finishes are harder to match than solid colors
  • Three-stage paints add a step and cost more
  • Sun-faded paint means blending into neighbouring panels
  • Edge-to-edge spraying is cheaper and shows

What is behind the panel

Visible damage is only the estimate’s starting point. Impacts push into what sits behind the panel — brackets, mounts, sensors and wiring — and none of that shows in a photo.

Modern bumpers in particular carry parking sensors and cameras that may need replacing and recalibrating. A quote given from a photograph is a guess until the panel comes off.

Questions worth asking

Ask whether the quote assumes repair or replacement, whether paint will be blended into adjacent panels, and what happens if hidden damage turns up once the panel is off.

A shop that has already thought about the third question will tell you how they handle it rather than being surprised by it.
