Slipping is the one that matters most
You press the accelerator, the engine gets louder and the tachometer climbs, but the car does not speed up the way the engine sound suggests it should.
That is the transmission failing to hold a gear, and it generates heat. Heat is what destroys the clutches and seals inside, so slipping is a problem that accelerates its own damage. This is not a symptom to monitor for a few months.
Delayed engagement
You shift into drive or reverse and there is a pause — one second, two seconds — before the car actually engages and moves.
This often points at low fluid or fluid that has lost its properties, and it is one of the more recoverable symptoms if caught early. It is also one of the easiest to dismiss, because once the car is moving everything feels normal.
What the fluid tells you
Transmission fluid is one of the most informative things on a car. Healthy fluid is red or pink and does not smell like much.
Dark brown or black fluid that smells burnt means the unit has been running hot. If you see metallic glitter or dark flecks, that is material from inside the transmission, and it changes the conversation from service to repair.
- Bright red, no strong odor: normal
- Darker red or light brown: due for service
- Dark brown or black with a burnt smell: it has been overheating
- Metallic particles or glitter: internal wear
- Milky or foamy: coolant contamination, needs immediate attention
Symptoms that are not always the transmission
Not every shifting complaint is a failing transmission, and that is genuinely good news. A misfiring engine can make shifts feel wrong. A failing speed sensor can cause erratic shifting. A throttle position fault can produce late or harsh shifts.
Those are far less expensive repairs than a rebuild, which is exactly why a real diagnosis should come before any quote for major transmission work.
