Four very different jobs
People hear "transmission" and assume the worst. Often it is not the worst. The four outcomes differ by an order of magnitude, and diagnosis exists to tell them apart before anyone spends money.
- Fluid and filter service — the cheapest outcome, and sometimes the whole fix
- External repair — solenoids, sensors, wiring or a leaking seal, done without opening the case
- Rebuild — the unit comes apart and worn internals are replaced
- Replacement — a remanufactured or used unit goes in
Why diagnosis comes first and is worth paying for
Slipping can be low fluid. It can also be worn clutch packs. Those two have nothing in common in cost, and no one can tell which by hearing the symptom described over the phone.
A shop that quotes a rebuild before diagnosing is guessing, and the guess is always expensive. Paying for diagnosis is how you avoid paying for a rebuild you did not need.
Rebuild or replace
When internals are worn, the choice is rebuilding your unit or fitting a remanufactured one. Rebuilding keeps your original unit and can cost less on common vehicles. A remanufactured unit is often faster and comes with a parts warranty from the remanufacturer.
The right answer depends on the vehicle, its mileage and how long you plan to keep it. A car with a tired engine and rust is a different decision from a clean car you intend to drive for another five years.
The part you control
Transmission fluid is not lifetime fluid, whatever the marketing says. Heat breaks it down, and stop-and-go driving in traffic is the hardest kind on it.
Servicing fluid on schedule is the cheapest transmission work there is, and it is the only stage where you are choosing the price rather than being handed it.
