Why was it dead? That is the whole question
A battery drained by an obvious cause — headlights left on, a door not fully closed, a car that sat for weeks — is often fine after a jump and a decent drive to recharge.
A battery that went dead with no explanation is telling you it can no longer hold a charge. Jumping it works today and probably will not next week.
When it is the alternator instead
The alternator recharges the battery while the engine runs. If it has failed, the car runs on battery power alone and will die once that is used up — often within a few miles.
The clue is what happens after the jump. If the car dies again shortly after the cables come off, the alternator is the likely culprit, and replacing the battery alone will not fix it. A charging-system test settles this in minutes.

Jump-starting safely
Modern vehicles have sensitive electronics, and a reversed connection can cause expensive damage. Connect positive to positive first, then the negative on the good battery, then the final negative clamp to an unpainted metal ground point on the dead vehicle — not directly to its negative terminal.
That last detail exists for a reason: it keeps any spark away from the battery itself, which vents hydrogen gas.
After a jump, drive or charge properly
A jump start gets the engine running but leaves the battery still largely depleted. Short trips will not recharge it, so if you shut the car off after ten minutes you may be stuck again.
Either drive for a decent stretch or have the battery properly charged and tested. A test tells you whether you had a bad night or need a battery, which beats guessing.
